Hi Angie,

The results you get from your research may vary depending on what you mean when you ask, "How has education changed over time?"  Do you mean to ask about the history of education, or about the progression of educational change?  The history of education may include the history of everything that falls under the topic of education, which makes the search broader.  "Educational change" is a specific term, and focusing the search on its history narrows the results considerably.

If you go to the online catalog ( you can see how the searches are affects.

  • education AND history

You should retrieve over 966,000 results, including print and electronic books as well as online articles.  You can further refine your search using the navigation bar on the left, narrowing it by item type, publication date, peer review, and other factors.

Now search

  • educational change AND history

This search should bring over 61,000 print and electronic results, which you can also refine using the navigation bar on the left.  You can see this set of results reflects the progress of educational reform rather than education in general.
