Hello!

Here are the best places to search and search strategies for your project.

Using the Industry Code link in the BA507 Research Guide, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital falls into these NAICS categories, listed from general to specific - the sector to the industry:

622    Hospitals
6221    General Medical and Surgical Hospitals
62211   General Medical and Surgical Hospitals
622110   General Medical and Surgical Hospitals

"This industry comprises establishments known and licensed as general medical and surgical hospitals primarily engaged in providing diagnostic and medical treatment (both surgical and nonsurgical) to inpatients with any of a wide variety of medical conditions. These establishments maintain inpatient beds and provide patients with food services that meet their nutritional requirements. These hospitals have an organized staff of physicians and other medical staff to provide patient care services. These establishments usually provide other services, such as outpatient services, anatomical pathology services, diagnostic X-ray services, clinical laboratory services, operating room services for a variety of procedures, and pharmacy services."

It's helpful to have multiple industry reports because vendors report differently, even for the same industry.

Next, on the same page of the research guide, Company & Industry Reports, link to Marketline. The Marketline reports won't always use the NAICS classification, but it's a good starting point. Click Browse by Industry, and from the pop-up choose Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare. Use the right-side toolbar to narrow to Healthcare, and then to Healthcare Facilities & Providers. Still using the right-side toolbar, narrow by geography to North America. The United States will then show in the results. Clicking United States - Healthcare Providers in the results will take you to the report, which is available online, or you can download the 38 page industry report.

You'll also want to search ABI/Inform Complete, linked on the Research Guide just below Marketline. When the search page loads, choose the Advanced Search. Once there, scroll down until you see NAICS code, and paste in the code - 622110 . Continue to scroll until you see the Document Type box, and click Industry Report. Search. You'll see about 25 results, including

  • Hospitals Industry (U.S.) Analytics, Extensive Financial Benchmarks, Metrics and Revenue Forecasts to 2022, NAIC 622000 Published April 12, 2016
  • General Medical and Surgical Hospitals Industry (U.S.) Analytics, Extensive Financial Benchmarks, Metrics and Revenue Forecasts to 2023, NAIC 622100 Published September 29, 2016.

If you look closely at the NAIC numbers in the titles, you'll see that the second (622100) is more specific than the first (622000), but both may be useful.

For the next source of information, financial benchmarks, try eStatement Studies, also listed below Marketline in the research guide. Using the first dropdown on the page, scroll until you reach the code 622110. Choose General Medical and Surgical Hospitals (Non-Profit) (Non-Cost of Sales). Click View. When the page loads select Annual Statement Studies. This will provide all kinds is important financial ratio benchmarks for the industry, so you can determine how Phoebe Putney is doing in comparison to others of the same size.

If you need additional info, go back to the research guide and click Financial Ratios in the left-side navigation. This will provide some websites. Morningstar is my preference.

Good luck with your research!
