Hello!

You can find a good amount of information on this topic in a couple of different places.  First, for definitions of substance abuse and mental illness, go to the psychology libguide at libguides.brenau.edu/psychology.  Choose the Background Research tab.  Enter the search term substance abuse into the Credo Reference box at the top of the page.  You will be asked to login using your Brenau username and password.  You will find many good definitions.  Next enter the search term mental illness.

Next, to find articles about the relationship between mental illness and substance abuse go to the articles tab on the psychology libguide.  Choose the database Academic Search Complete.  Go ahead and limit your search by clicking on the Full Text and Scholary (Peer Reviewed) Journal boxes and then enter the search terms Substance Use Disorders AND Mental Illness.  You will find many good articles including titles such as:

Exploring the Association between Lifetime Prevalence of Mental Illness and Transition from Substance Use to Substance Use Disorders: Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC).

To see the full text of the article click on the title and then click on PDF full text to the left and top of your screen.  If you are interested in using any of these articles for your paper, you can email them to yourself by clicking on the envelope icon to the right of your screen and entering your Brenau email address.
