A scholarly article is an article written by an expert in the field on which the author is writing.  Often, the author is affiliated with a university or school.  Scholarly articles will always contain and abstract (a short summary at the beginning of the article which explains what the article is about) and references at the end.  Please watch this short video for futher explanation of the differences between scholary, trade, and popular sources:
