Question

I am looking information about Kendrick Melrose's leadership style from within the previous five years

Details

My team project for OL-500 is to profile the leadership style of a particular individual. Our team selected Kendrick Melrose, who was to former CEO of The TORO Company. He is the current CEO of Leading By Serving, LLC. Many of the references that our team was able to locate via LibGuide resources are pre-2004.

Hello!

I've conducted extensive research on your topic, and the bottom line is that Ken Melrose isn't being written about in academic or trade publications. I checked all of the relevant databases and Google Scholar. That's why you couldn't find the sources. Information can be found in the popular press and web sites, and some trade web sites.

You may want to run this strategy by your professor. There is a great deal of scholarly and trade information available on servant leadership; you can use that as the backbone of your paper. Illustrate this component with popular sources about Melrose, particularly primary sources such as interviews published on credible sites, quotes from the Toro site, and from his book.

To execute this strategy, I would link to the Organizational Leadership LibGuide and click on Resources for OL. There should be more than enough information in ABI/Inform Complete and Business Source Complete, the first two databases listed. Search "servant leadership" in either database, then limit the results to the last 5 - 10 years and scholarly or trade publications. The limiters are in the right side toolbar (ABI/Inform) or the left side toolbar (Business Source Complete). You will find articles such as

  • Washington, R. R., Sutton, C. D., & Feild, H. S. (2006). Individual differences in servant leadership: The roles of values and personality. Leadership & Organization Development Journal, 27(8), 700-716. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/01437730610709309
  • Liden, R. C., Wayne, S. J., Chenwei, L., & Meuser, J. D. (2014). Servant leadership and serving culture: Influence on individual and unit performance. Academy Of Management Journal, 57(5), 1434-1452. doi:10.5465/amj.2013.0034

Then Google "Ken Melrose" and limit the results to the last 5 - 10 years using "search tools > any time" and "custom range". Look for high quality sites such as the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (trade), Toro Employees and Culture (trade), the Irrigation & Green Industry Network (trade), Ethix (university site), The Environmental Institute for Golf (trade), and The Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity (government). Look especially for interviews, quotes, and actions that illustrate his leadership style. This information, combined with information from the book should be enough for a good project.

You may have already seen these, but if not, the linked videos will help you sort out the reliable, credible sites from the open web.

Thanks for asking a librarian.
