Question

Is Google Scholar considered a database?

Details

I'm working on an assignment that requires to me fill in information for sources I used for my research paper. For journal articles, it asked to name the database. I searched the Library databases for articles on social media in the workplace, but I couldn't find any.

Hello,

The answer to your question is both yes, and no. Google Scholar is a database, but not what is intended for the assignment. One of the purposes of the assignment is to learn to use the information that is available only through the Library. The best information is often very costly, and the library pays for you to have access to the good stuff.

To find information on social media in the workplace using the Library databases, link to the Business LibGuide. We have many, many different databases, and this one lists the best databases to use when looking for business information of all kinds. The guide has been used over 15,500 times this year.

On the guide, click on the Articles tab. On this page, select the first database listed - ABI/Inform Complete. This is an awesome database that covers all aspects of business. You will have to log in by entering your Brenau username and password.

Search "social media" AND workplace. Type in the quotation marks and the AND for the best set of results, or easier still, paste in the search. Under the search box, click full text and scholarly journals. This will yield 37 articles from 2007-2014, including

  • Birschel, D., C.E.B.S. (2010). Embracing and controlling social media in the workplace: Ten rules. Benefits Quarterly, 26(2), 53.
  • Quish, R. (2010). Social media: Creating richer relationships in the workplace. People and Strategy, 33(3), 7-8.

Several of the articles look really good. If your assignment doesn't limit you to scholarly publications and you need more info, un-click scholarly journals and search again. Then, scroll down the right side toolbar, and under Publication Type, select Trade Publications. This is the second preferred type of information for business.

Thanks for asking a librarian!
